UPDATE So I stayed up until 4am reading Gambit and writing this review I stand by what I said but I was kinda sleep deprived and angry, heck I still am but if it's not coherent I apologize.
Okay so there's a scene at the end of Allegiant that I really really love, “If you dare suggest that again,” I say, “I’ll—” “You’ll what?” Christina shoves me back, hard. “Hurt me? You know, there’s a word for big, strong men who attack women, and it’s coward.” and the whole time I've been reading Gambit I've been thinking about it because Cristina is a strong character who can take care of her self but Four is always going to be bigger and stronger, not necessarily better but stronger nonetheless. Now the reason I've been thinking about is because in Gambit we have Reese, (AKA our coward) now she is fighting him with her powers but she has little control over them, where as he has perfect control over his, and she is literally a waif of a girl, she doesn't even have enough body fat to keep herself warm yet he's nearly killed her twice and wounded her multiple times, yet it's getting played oof like he's totally twitterpated. Reaching out, he grasped a thick strand of my hair between his fingers and played with it. “For instance, I’ll tell you now, in a most unprofessional manner, that I find your appearance quite stunning.”I froze, uncertain how to respond. Was he playing or being serious? He stepped close enough for me to feel the heat radiating from his chest. I tilted my head back, searching his face for signs of deceit. “But I will never make a comment like that when Morry Roanoke is in my presence.”He gazed into my upturned face. “Do you get my meaning?”Nodding, I waited for him to release my hair. He didn’t, and the moment stretched out between us. A flush warmed my face. Words wouldn’t come. He rubbed the silky strand slowly, sliding it between his fingers with a look in his eyes I didn’t fully understand. “Are you going to let go?”I finally asked, wishing I could read his thoughts. He gave the strand a gentle, teasing tug. “I haven’t decided.” Some chapters later Reece clasped my palms together with his free hand to still the quaking room. “Before I’m tempted to break your little neck, we need to get a few things straight. When it comes to you and me, certain topics are off limits. The guardian”— he shook his fist, causing agony so sharp I cried out—“ is one of them.... By the time he’d slid his hand into my hair and grabbed a fistful, it was too late to run or use my skill. With a tear-jerking snap, he forced my head back and pushed his face close to mine......Before I could dismiss his eloquent words as a manipulation tactic, he squeezed his fist. Hard. I sucked in my breath as pain sizzled like lightning across my scalp.....“Are we done?” He sounded disappointed. Sniffling, I nodded. “We can’t keep this up, Willow. Something has to give.” “You shouldn’t hurt me like this.” My voice came out fragile, like Morry’s gold-rimmed china cup. “You shouldn’t mock my integrity,” he responded, without remorse. You force my hand, Willow, and I don’t care for it.” and after that takes place he continues to blame her a couple more times and then they make out. This is abuse plain and simple, hell it's nearly textbook, it's her fault for provoking him not his for being a little bitch. Now Willow is not perfect by any means, first off she keeps running back to him after he treats her like a dog, actually I'm a animal lover if someone treated a dog like that I would probably lose my shit, anyway my point is I wasn't very fond of her either but to me she is the victim.
I'm so excited I just got Gambit off Netgalley!
